  Y.A.J.vol. 3 (1873/4) p. 180.
In the year 1229 King Henry III spent his Christmas at York. When he was resting at Sherburn on his return to the south, a petition was presented to him by Anketin de Mallory, husband of the daughter and heiress of William de Mulethorpe(Mowthorpe) (a.k.a. William de Brideshalle, see E.Y.C.) a great Yorkshire baron who died indebted to the jew Aaron of York.
The object of the petition was to obtain time for the payment of the debt. The King, dealing with the Jew's money as if it were his own, Granted Mallory three years respite upon the pretext that Aaron had not paid his share of the last valliage."

Mount Ferrant Castle Birdsall
After the rebellion that followed the death of the Conqueror, in 1088, the lands that had belonged to the Count of Mortain were forfeited. These included 7 curacates in another Leavening. The Count's land in the area went to Nigel Fossard, who had been a
subtenant of the Count. In the late 11th or 12th Centuries, he built a castle at Mount Ferrant on a headland on the escarpment of Birdsall Brow. Theses early castles were built of wood, some later being rebuilt in stone.
There are several legends, but history tells a different story. It was Henry II who ordered the destruction of Mount Ferrant, for William's support of the rebellion of 1174 and that it was Robert de Stuteville, Sheriff of Yorkshire who carried out those orders and sent the wood to Meaux Abbey.
On his journeys through England and Wales between 1535 and 1543, John Leland, the Tudor antiquary noted that: "Mount Ferraunt castelle stood 2 miles from Malton, in the lordship and paroche of Byredeshaul. It is now clerely defacid, and bussches grow where it stoode".

St. Mary's, York, of the church of Birdsall and whatever be-
longed to it, and 2 carucates in Stearsby. c.1110-1125.
           Charter R., I Edw. II, m. 3. Pd. in Cal. Chart. R., iii, 115.
Robertus de Brideshala ecclesiam ejusdem ville et quod ei
pertinet et ij carucatas terre in Stiresbi.
At the Survey Nigel Fossard held under the count of Mortain in Birdsall
(and Sutton) Chilbert's late manor of 13 carucates (and a half). In addi-
^,to hL and there was soc of the archbishop's manor of Weaverthorpe
2 1/2 car., and Ulchil, the king's thegn, had a manor in Birdsall and Sutton
(3 1/2 car. ), which he had held T.R.E. The land in Stearsby which Robert de
Brideshale gave to St. Mary's was not included in the Survey of the land
of the count of Mortain, but 2 carucates there were assigned to the count in
the summary of the Survey. It is probable that there were 18 car. in
Birdsall.   In 1303 there were 11 1/2 carucates of the fee of Maulay (Fossard)
4 carucates of the archbishop's fee, and the canons of Watton had 2 1/2
carucates belonging to the fee of Ros. The 11 1/2 carucates of the Fossard
fee were  held in the l2th century by the local family, and formed part of the
3 fees held in 1166 by Robert de Brideshale of William Fossard. This
Robert may have been the Robert son of William de Brideshale who gave
5 marks in 1166 for relief of land held of the crown in the wapentake of
Harthilll. Two vears later he owed 5 marks for an agreement by duel
with Walter Percehaie touching land, and paid the fine in 1169. From  that
time nothing  more seems to be known about this, the elder, line of the family,
and it is  evident that their demesne in Birdsall, amounting to at least 6
carucates, escheated to William Fossard  It descended to the younger
W lliam who had a wooden tower here known as " castrum de Mount-
feraunt"  which was destroyed in or about 1176 by the Duke of Albermarle.
The Brideshales had, however, sub-infeuded a considerable part of their
land in Birdsall and Wharram-le-Street to a local family named Barkethorpe,
of whom was Robert de Barkethorpe, the vendor to Adam first abbot of
Meaux (1150-1160), of 2 bovates in Wharram. William de Barkethorpe, in
the time of Philip, second abbot of Meaux (1160-1182), recovered against
the monks a right of pasturage in the land around Wharram Grange, known
as Thornlund, and about the year 1200 gave the monks his land of Hall-Garth
in Wharram, near a mill called Schyrreve, and land between the York road
trending towards Crandale and the bounds ofWharram Percy and between
the water-course in Wharram-le-Street and the headland belonging to the
Hospital of Jerusalem, in exchange for other land.  A few years later he
renewed a former  agreement with the monks, limiting the right of pasturage
of his rustics, dwelling on the west  side of Wharram, to 4 oxen and 4 horses
in Wharram  Grange and excluding them from pasturage in Thornlund.
The next  link in the descent is wanting, but in 1243 John de Barkethorpe
held of the fee of Maulay 1 fee in Birdsall and 1/2  fee in Wharram ; in 1279
William de Barkthorpe held 1/2  fee in Wharram.

From Early Yorkshire Charters No.354 1156-1157
In a confirmation by Henry II to the monks of St. Mary's ,York, of the gifts made to them by William I, William II, Henry I and various barons is mention of the gift to them by Robertus de Bridshala of the church at Birdsall and 2 carucates of land in Stearsby. (His gift of the church of Birdsall proves that he held a considerable part of the vill of Birdsall under Nigel Fossard, who had 12 carucates there. He also held the 2 carucates at Stearsby of Nigel Fossard, as of the escheated fee of the Count of Mortain, whose tenement in this vill is only recorded in the summary of The Survey.)

Gilbert de Bridssale occurs in the Pipe Rolls for 1167 and 1176.

Robert Birdsall land Terrington 1166
Robert de Brideshale held a knight's fee of William Paynel
in 1166. This lay in Terrington, wap. Bulmer, and in Wiganthorpe
and Mowthorpe, both in the parish of Terrington.  Although
there are no twelfth-century charters available to prove this
identification the subsequent interest held by the Luterels makes
  it reasonably certain.
At the Domesday survey the count of Mortain held a manor
of 3 carucates 6 bovates in Terrington and Wiganthorpe, and 3
carucates in Mowthorpe. Although Richard [de Surdeval] is not
mentioned as the count's tenant, it is probable that as at Slingsbv
and elsewhere  Ralph Paynel acquired an interest as his successor.
Robert de Brideshale, who took his name from Birdsall in
the East Riding, also held 3 knights' fees of William Fossard in 1166,
part of which lay in Birdsall.  He was probably the grandson of
Robert de Brideshale who gave the church of Birdsall and land in
Stearsby to St. Mary's, York, in the period c. 1110-1125; and the
son of William de Brideshale, being the Robert son of William de
Brideshale who owed 5 marks for the relief of his land in the
wapentake of Harthill at Michaelmas 1166;10 and the Robert son of
William de Brideshale who issued a charter relating to Bramham,
held of the Fossard fee, in the period 1160-80. Farrer gave some
further details about him in his account of the Fossard fee, and
suggested that the demesne in Birdsall held by the main line of the
  family escheated.
In 1213 the king granted to Robert de Neville, his clerk, the
custody of all the land and of the heirs of Adam de Muletorp, with
their marriages and that of Mabel their mother, for 100li. and a
palfrey. As in 1219 the son of Adam de Briddeshale was in the
king's custody, mag. Robert de Neville having him of the king's
gift, it is likely that Adam de Muletorp was the same person and
a member of the Birdsall family.
In 1226-28 William de Mulethorpe, who was alive in 1227,
had held 2 carucates of land in Octon, wap. Dickering and 10
bovates in North Dalton, wap. Harthill, as a serjeanty held of the
king by the service of an archer, finding a serjeant for the custody
of York castle in the time of war for 40 days and also a serjeant for
leading the king's treasure through the whole county. In 1230 the
king pardoned Anketil Mallore, who had as wife the daughter and
heir of William de Mulethorpe, (disputable, The Kirkstall Coucher Book
says that Anketin Mallory was married to Sarah, daughter and heiress of
Robert de Brideshale) his scutage of a knight's fee which
he held of Andrew Luterel of the fee of the said William. It may
be deduced that it was this knight's fee which Robert de Brideshale
had held of William Paynel in 1166. In 1275 Nicholas son of Sir
Anketin Malore had held 3 carucates of land in Mowthorpe of the
heirs of Sir Andrew Luterel, and land and rent in Terrington and
Wiganthorpe, with the advowson of Terrington; and in 1288 one
of his heirs had held land and rent in Mowthorpe, Wiganthorpe and
Terrington of Robert Luterel by knight service.
